First contact didn't go as planned.

Time Gate 8, one of humanity's portals between the stars, has been overrun by a mysterious alien intelligence, and the planet Luddeccea is now cut off.

Haunted by those she left behind, Commander Noa Sato is on a desperate mission to save her homeworld. Navigating the ancient Ark, she seeks a hidden gate that will transport her ship to Earth and the Galactic Fleet. But the Luddeccean system harbors dangers, and so does her crew.

The only crew member she completely trusts is James Sinclair, but he doesn't trust himself.

James isn't the man he once was. He has a hunger that is never sated, kills without regrets, and is fitted with extraordinary augments he doesn't remember getting. Can James control his augments, or will they control him?

In a future where almost all humans are augmented, James' answer and Noa's mission will determine the fate of the human race, and the enemy is already within the gates.

Noa Ark Archangel Project Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) C Gockel Emily Woo Zeller Podium Publishing Books

I enjoyed reading Archangel Down, but I loved Noa’s Ark. The second book is action-packed and provides answers to some of the questions raised in the first book.
This series, the Archangel Project, is darker than the author’s I Bring The Fire series, there’s no denying it. But Noa’s Ark has a satisfying balance between darkness and light. The relationship between Noa and James is luminous and at times joyful. The author makes good use of humor as well. Our favorite ten-legged mascot, Carl Sagan, is still on Noa’s team if not on her crew, helping whenever he can and providing entertainment. I am hoping that, at some point, the humans (or at least Noa herself) will recognize that his sentience exceeds their own and that he’s an “old soul”.
I enjoyed Gockel’s imaginative use of technology in Noa’s Ark. I can believe that much of the tech she is predicting will ultimately come into being in the real world.
My admiration for Noa as a strong protagonist and leader continues to grow. We haven’t begun to see everything that this young female commander can do.
As one of the beta readers for this book, I received a free advance copy of the final version in exchange for an honest review. I also bought the book after it was released. Three cheers for Carolyn Gockel and her Archangel Project!

Noa Ark Archangel Project Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) C Gockel Emily Woo Zeller Podium Publishing Books Reviews

I love finding a new series by a good author. The second book is not the let down in the trilogy either. The characters are developed and flawed. They're interesting. The story line is semi-predictable but totally enjoyable. The story outside of the story is fascinating and still has me guessing. I'm not totally convinced who the bad guys are. I sure hope the resolution doesn't disappoint. I'm off to but the 3rd book now.
I enjoyed this book even more than the first, I find this series and this book particularly reminiscent of Elizabeth Moon's Vatta Wars Series. I've also recently been reading Jack Campbell's Lost Fleet, and this novel has similar themes and situations. It also reminds me a bit of Isaac Asimov Foundation series. This book might appeal also to readers of those authors.
This author has a good mix of characters, and it's not all serious and gloomy, there is irony, sarcasm and lightheartedness which contrasts the darker themes. I particularly like the mix of ages and genders, the feisty 'grandmother' is one of my favourite characters.
Cons
To me a good story is more important than the editing or polish of the book. The author sometimes does not describe much detail in the writing, in style of leaving most things up to the reader's imagination, however, sometimes the description is very detailed; when this change happens this throws me out of the story and I feel frustrated, when a character or object is suddenly not where I imagined it to be. I do not know much about writing, so when I come on these or other issues I suspect the is flaw in this reader rather than the writing!
It might feel a bit practicable to some readers, but that is sometimes an unfortunate byproduct of doing a lot of reading. I contract that with the knowledge from the authors other books that no character is safe.
This is one of the most enjoyable stories I've read.

If you're not sure, take a chance.
Writing SciFi these days is like writing a travel article on New Orleans -- it's all been said many times over. What makes for a great story is no longer new technology or outsmarting a superior alien race but creating the kind of complex characters -- compelling individuals who, not only pull the reader into the story but, with whom you would entrust your own survival. Gockel is a mastermind at this, as well as with presenting and developing new and thought provoking technicological concepts. Nora's Ark, you can speculate to your heart's content on how the allegory will play out, is the second novel in the Archangel trilogy. She had better get the finale out soon or I will lead a pitchfork and torch bearing mob of Ludites to beat upon her door.
I'm nearly done with book 3, and continue to enjoy this series thoroughly. I'm very impressed with this author, she has been able to continue to put out high quality entertainment. The story has alot going on, yet remains true to its character focus despite the many subplots weaved together. The side characters are extremely memorable unlike many other books. Gunny, Shixtynine, and many many others are given just enough depth and plenty of entertainment value to make a reader enjoy them, without having to cling to the shoulder of the main characters the entire time. Reading is my only real hobby at this point in my life and having a chance to escape through good books makes life enjoyable, thanks again for many enjoyable hours in another world.
I'm a sucker for this sub-genre and have enjoyed the two books in this series so far. The writing could be leaner and the characters more defined, but like an old tool, it gets the job done. For me, the acid test is whether I keep reading the series and I'm off to look for the next one!
This series must be read in order. The first book is Archangel Down. The second book is Carl Sagan's Hunt For Intelligent Life In The Universe (a flashback short story). This is the third book. I can't wait to read Heretic!

Noa and her crew aboard the Ark are doing their best to survive and get to the secret Time Gate hidden within the Kanakah Cloud in order to summon help from the Fleet. What is happening on Luddeccea is as bad, if not worse, than the atrocities committed by the Nazis. James is more important than he should be to her... And at times he really creeps her out. Who is he really? What is he? He resembles her dead husband more than is believable. She can't imagine life without him though, especially since her brother Kenji betrayed her. Why did Kenji turn her in to be sent to a concentration camp? Did he realize what he was doing? Can they repair the ship enough to fulfill their mission? Or will they be caught and turned in? What exactly is the Archangel Project? And how is she involved? Shouldn't she know? What does it have to do with James? Who can she trust?
